During pre-production I went out to a couple locations with some artists and the audio team to collect reference. I took turnaround photos of trees and rocks to use with 123D Catch; this software converts photos to 3D models.
This was the resulting mesh I got from 123D Catch. I was able to take this into ZBrush and sculpt as needed. 123D Catch does produce textures from the photographs, however for this project we wanted our own distorted textures so I chose to discard them.
This method was experimental but it saved us a lot production of time. Since most of our environment was organic we essentially created all of our base meshes from photographs.
